“Above and Below” explores our visual reliance on smartphones by fusing three separate narratives that mimic the scroll of an Instagram feed.
“Above and Below” was inspired by how much information we digest through Instagram. I became interested in exploring how to play with the app’s framework, which creates a seemingly endless stream of top to bottom visuals. By depicting three distinct stories in three columns, the viewer is allowed to draw their own connections between the stories, which are inspired by my interests in contemporary art, dance, and surrealism. This also invites repeated viewings, to draw the eye towards different details and forming new interpretations. This sense of “connection” mirrors our desires on social media. Each frame in “Above and Below” lasts around six seconds, which is the maximum length of videos on the now-defunct Vine, another social media platform that inspired this piece.
